Warning Signs

Signs Your Car's Heater Needs Repair

Heating problems tend to show up on the first cold morning. These are the most common clues, and what they usually point to.

Heater blowing cold

Usually low coolant, a thermostat stuck open, air in the system or a clogged heater core.

Fan only works on high

The classic sign of a failed blower motor resistor. No fan at all points to the blower motor, a fuse or a relay.

Heat on one side only

Common on dual-zone systems with a failed blend door actuator, and sometimes a sign of low coolant.

Clicking behind the dash

A tapping or clicking noise from the dashboard is usually a blend door actuator with stripped gears.

Foggy windshield or sweet smell

A greasy film on the glass, a syrupy smell or damp passenger carpet can mean a leaking heater core.

Defroster won't clear the glass

Your defroster relies on the heater, so a windshield that stays fogged or iced is a safety problem, not just a comfort one.

What We Do

Heater Repair Without the Shop Visit

Your car's heater is part of the cooling system. Hot coolant from the engine flows through the heater core behind the dashboard, a blower pushes air across it, and blend doors mix in just enough of that heat to reach the temperature you set. When any one of those parts fails, the heat stops working.

We test each part of that system to find the actual cause before we replace anything, so you aren't paying for parts you don't need. Most heating repairs are done right where your car is parked.

No-heat diagnosis

We check coolant level, thermostat operation, heater core flow, the blower and the blend doors to pinpoint why the heat is cold or weak.

Thermostat & coolant

We replace thermostats stuck open, repair leaking heater hoses and bleed trapped air from the cooling system so hot coolant reaches the heater.

Blower motor & resistor

No airflow, or a fan that only works on high? We repair blower motors, resistors, control modules and the related fuses and relays.

Blend doors & controls

We replace failed blend and mode door actuators that cause clicking, heat on one side only, or air stuck on one temperature or vent.

Heater core

We flush clogged heater cores and replace leaking ones at our offsite repair facility, with pickup and delivery.

Common Causes

Why Your Car Heater Isn't Working

These are the problems we find most often when a heater blows cold, weak or not at all.

  1. Low coolant

If coolant is leaking out, there may not be enough to reach the heater core. Low coolant also puts the engine at risk of overheating, so it's worth fixing quickly.

  2. Thermostat stuck open

The engine never reaches full operating temperature, so the coolant reaching the heater is only lukewarm. You'll often see the temperature gauge sit lower than normal.

  3. Air trapped in the system

After a coolant leak or repair, an air pocket can block flow to the heater core. Properly bleeding the system often brings the heat right back.

  4. Clogged heater core

Old coolant and debris can plug the small passages in the heater core. Both heater hoses get hot under the hood, but the air inside stays cool.

  5. Failed blend door actuator

The small motor that mixes hot and cold air can fail, leaving the temperature stuck or one side of the car cold, often with a clicking sound.

  6. Blower motor or resistor failure

The heat is there but the air isn't moving. A bad resistor leaves the fan working only on high, while a bad motor stops it completely.

Got Questions?

Heater Repair FAQs

Straight answers to what drivers ask about cold heaters, blower problems, heater cores and what repairs cost.

How much does heater repair cost?

It depends on what's causing the problem and on your vehicle. Some fixes, like topping off and bleeding the cooling system or replacing a blower motor resistor, are quick. Others, like a heater core replacement, take much more labor. We find the cause first, then quote the parts and labor upfront, and no work begins until you approve it. There are no hidden fees. Because we don't pay rent on a traditional shop, our overhead is lower and those savings are passed on to you. Call or text 937-609-3554 with your year, make and model to get a quote.

Why is my car heater blowing cold air?

Your heater uses hot engine coolant to warm the cabin, so the most common causes are low coolant from a leak, a thermostat stuck open, air trapped in the cooling system, a clogged heater core or a blend door that is stuck on the cold side. We test the system to find the actual cause instead of guessing with parts. If the cause turns out to be a coolant leak or overheating problem, our cooling system repair service covers that too.

Why does my heater fan only work on high?

That is almost always a failed blower motor resistor or blower control module. The lower fan speeds are routed through the resistor, while the highest speed usually bypasses it, so when the resistor fails you're left with high or nothing. It's a common, fairly quick repair that we can usually do on the spot. If the fan doesn't work on any speed, the blower motor, a fuse or a relay is more likely.

Why is heat only coming out of one side of my car?

On vehicles with dual-zone climate control, a failed blend door actuator on one side is a common cause. Low coolant can cause it too, because some systems send heat to one side first when there isn't enough hot coolant flowing through the heater core. We check the coolant level and the actuators to pin down which one it is.

What is the clicking noise behind my dashboard?

A repeated clicking or tapping from behind the dash, often when you start the car or change the temperature, is usually a blend door or mode door actuator with stripped gears. Besides the noise, it can leave the air stuck on hot, cold or one vent setting. We replace the failed actuator and recalibrate the system when the vehicle requires it.

What are the signs of a bad heater core?

The heater core sits behind the dashboard and works like a small radiator for the cabin. Signs it's failing include little or no heat, a sweet coolant smell inside the car, a foggy or greasy film on the inside of the windshield, damp carpet on the passenger side, and coolant loss with no leak under the hood. We flush clogged heater cores and replace leaking ones at our offsite repair facility, with pickup and delivery.

Is it safe to drive without a working heater?

In an Ohio winter it can be risky. Your defroster depends on the heating system, so a heater that doesn't work can leave your windshield fogged or iced over and limit your view of the road. And if the heater quit because coolant is low, the engine can overheat. If your temperature gauge is climbing or you smell coolant, don't keep driving it. Since we come to you, you don't have to drive it to a shop.

Can you fix my heater at my home or work?

Yes. As a mobile mechanic we diagnose heating problems and replace thermostats, blower motors, blower motor resistors, blend door actuators and heater hoses right in your driveway, apartment lot or workplace parking lot. All we need is a safe spot to park next to your vehicle. Heater core replacement usually means removing the dashboard, so we do that work at our offsite repair facility and pick up and deliver your vehicle. For other major repairs or bad weather, pickup and delivery is available too.

How long does heater repair take?

Many heating repairs, like a blower motor resistor, thermostat or blend door actuator that's easy to reach, are finished during the visit. Some actuators and blower motors are buried behind the dash and take longer, and some parts have to be ordered. A heater core replacement is the biggest job and can take a day or more at our repair facility. We tell you upfront how long your repair should take.

Can a dirty cabin air filter cause weak heat?

Yes. A cabin air filter packed with dust and leaves restricts how much air reaches the vents, so the heat feels weak even when the air coming out is hot. It can also make the windows slower to defog. It's one of the first things we check, and our filter replacement service can take care of it during the same visit.

Is your heater repair work under warranty?

Yes. All work is backed by our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on the parts we supply and the labor we perform.
