Yes. We are a mobile mechanic, so most alternators are tested and replaced right in your driveway, apartment lot or workplace parking lot. All we need is a safe, relatively flat spot to park. That also means you don't have to drive a car with a failing alternator to a shop and risk it dying on the way. For major repairs or unsafe weather, we offer pickup and delivery from our offsite repair facility.

The symptoms overlap, which is why we test before replacing anything. As a rule of thumb, a car that won't start after sitting but runs fine once it's jumped often points to the battery, while a car that starts and then dies while driving, or a battery warning light that comes on while the engine is running, often points to the alternator. A weak battery can also overwork a good alternator, so we test the battery, the alternator output and the belt together.

Not for long. When the alternator stops charging, the car runs on whatever is left in the battery, and once that drains the engine can stall without warning, sometimes in traffic. If your battery light is on or your lights are dimming, avoid long drives and call or text us. Since we come to you, you don't have to risk the trip to a shop.

Most alternators wear out from age and heat. Common failure points are worn bearings, worn brushes, a failed voltage regulator or diode, and loose or corroded connections. Problems with the serpentine belt or tensioner, and oil or coolant leaking onto the alternator, can shorten its life. We look for those underlying causes so the new alternator isn't set up to fail.

Many alternators last 7 to 10 years, but heat, short trips, extra electrical accessories and a weak battery can all shorten that. If yours is original and your vehicle is getting up in years, a quick charging system test is a good idea before it leaves you stranded.

Not always. A failing alternator can drain a battery deeply, and some batteries recover while others don't. We test the battery as part of the job and only recommend replacing it if it fails the test, because a weak battery makes a new alternator work harder than it should.

No. A jump start only puts a little charge into the battery so the engine can start. If the alternator isn't charging, the battery will drain again and the car will die. If you need a jump more than once, the charging system should be tested.

It depends on the vehicle. Many alternators are replaced during the visit. Some engines need more parts removed to reach the alternator, and some parts have to be ordered. Either way, we tell you upfront and can schedule the repair or use our pickup and delivery service.
