Warning Signs

Signs Your Engine Needs Repair

Engine problems almost always start small. Catching them early is the difference between a gasket and a new engine.

Oil leaks or burning smell

Spots under the car, a burning oil smell or smoke from under the hood usually mean a gasket or seal is leaking, often onto the hot exhaust.

Overheating or losing coolant

A climbing temperature gauge, coolant that keeps disappearing or milky oil can point to a cooling problem or a failing head gasket.

Knocking, ticking or rattling

New engine noises, especially a rattle at startup or a knock that rises with engine speed, should be checked before they get worse.

Misfires & rough running

Shaking, stumbling, hesitation or a flashing check engine light often mean a cylinder isn't firing properly.

Smoke from the exhaust

Blue smoke usually means burning oil, sweet-smelling white smoke means burning coolant, and black smoke means the engine is running rich.

What We Do

Engine Repair, On Site or at Our Facility

Engine symptoms overlap. Overheating, a misfire or a noise can each come from several different parts, and guessing gets expensive fast. Every engine repair starts with confirming the cause, so you only pay to fix what's actually wrong.

Our fully equipped service van handles many engine repairs right where your car is parked. Larger jobs that need more time or heavier equipment are done at our offsite repair facility, and we pick up and deliver your vehicle. Either way, you know where the work will be done and what it costs before we start.

Oil leaks & engine gaskets

Valve cover and oil pan gaskets, timing cover seals, main seals and oil filter housing gaskets replaced to stop leaks for good.

Head gasket repair

We confirm a head gasket failure with testing first, then repair it before overheating causes more damage.

Timing belts & timing chains

Scheduled timing belt service and replacement of stretched or noisy timing chains, tensioners and guides.

Misfires & rough running

Ignition coils, spark plugs, fuel injectors and intake or vacuum leaks repaired so the engine runs smoothly again.

Engine mounts

Worn or broken mounts that cause vibration, clunks or excess engine movement replaced on site.

Major engine repair

Larger internal engine repairs are done at our offsite repair facility, with pickup and delivery of your vehicle.

What We Fix

The Most Common Engine Repairs We Do

Knowing what usually fails helps you understand your estimate and spot problems before they get bigger.

  1. Valve cover gaskets

The most common engine oil leak. Old gaskets harden and seep oil onto the exhaust, causing a burning smell and sometimes misfires.

  2. Oil pan & main seals

Leaks at the bottom of the engine drip onto the driveway and can run the engine low on oil if they're ignored.

  3. Head gaskets

Often the result of overheating. A failed head gasket mixes coolant and oil or burns coolant, and needs repair before the damage spreads.

  4. Timing belts & chains

A skipped timing belt service or a stretched chain can leave you stranded, and on many engines a failure causes major damage.

  5. Ignition coils & spark plugs

Worn plugs and failing coils cause misfires, rough idle and lost power, and can ruin the catalytic converter if left alone.

  6. Intake & vacuum leaks

Leaking intake gaskets and cracked hoses cause lean codes, a rough or high idle and poor fuel economy.

Got Questions?

Engine Repair FAQs

Straight answers to what drivers ask about oil leaks, head gaskets, timing chains, engine noises and repair costs.

How much does engine repair cost?

It depends on your vehicle, the engine and what has failed. Replacing an ignition coil or a valve cover gasket is a very different job from a head gasket or a timing chain. We diagnose the problem first, then give you an upfront estimate for the repair, and no work begins until you approve it. There are no hidden fees. Because we don't pay rent on a traditional shop, our overhead is lower and those savings are passed on to you. Call or text 937-609-3554 with your year, make and model and what the engine is doing to get on the schedule.

Can you repair my engine at my home or work?

Yes, for many repairs. As a mobile mechanic we handle a lot of engine work right in your driveway, apartment lot or workplace parking lot, including ignition coils and spark plugs, sensors, many gaskets and seals, and engine mounts. All we need is a safe, level spot to park next to your vehicle. Larger engine repairs are done at our offsite repair facility, and we pick up and deliver your vehicle.

Which engine repairs are done at your repair facility?

Bigger jobs that need more time, lifting equipment or a controlled workspace, such as head gaskets, timing chains and other internal engine work, are usually done at our offsite repair facility. We tell you upfront where the work will be done. When it goes to the facility, we pick up your vehicle, make the repair and bring it back, so you still don't have to arrange a tow or a ride.

Do you diagnose the problem before repairing the engine?

Always. Engine symptoms overlap a lot. Overheating, a misfire or a noise can each have several causes, and replacing parts on a guess gets expensive. We test and inspect to confirm what has failed, explain it in plain English, and give you an estimate before any repair begins. If you aren't sure what's wrong yet, start with our engine diagnostics service.

Is it worth repairing my engine or should I replace the car?

It depends on the age, mileage and overall condition of the vehicle, the cost of the repair and what else it may need soon. A gasket, a timing chain or a mount on an otherwise healthy car is usually worth fixing. When the repair is major, we give you an honest assessment of the rest of the vehicle so you can decide whether the repair makes sense. We will never push a repair you don't need.

What are the signs of a blown head gasket?

Common signs include overheating, coolant loss with no visible leak, white exhaust smoke with a sweet smell, milky or foamy oil, bubbles in the coolant reservoir and a rough-running engine. Some of these can also come from other problems, so we test the cooling system and engine to confirm a head gasket failure before recommending the repair.

Is it safe to drive with an oil leak?

A small seep is usually not an emergency, but it should be checked and the oil level watched closely. A leak that drips on the exhaust can smoke or create a fire risk, and a fast leak can run the engine low on oil and cause serious damage. If you see a puddle under the car, smell burning oil or the oil pressure light comes on, stop driving and call us. Since we come to you, you don't have to drive it to a shop.

What causes an engine to knock or tick?

A light ticking is often caused by low oil, a noisy valve lifter, an exhaust manifold leak or normal fuel injector sound. A deeper knock that gets louder with engine speed can mean worn internal bearings, and a rattle at startup can mean a stretched timing chain. Some of these are minor and some need attention right away, so it's worth having a new engine noise checked soon. Check the oil level first, and if a knock is loud or the oil light is on, stop driving.

Why is my engine burning oil or smoking?

Blue-gray smoke usually means oil is getting burned, often from worn valve seals, piston rings or a faulty PCV system. White smoke that smells sweet usually means coolant is getting burned, which can point to a head gasket. Black smoke usually means the engine is running rich from a fuel or sensor problem. The color of the smoke and when it happens help us narrow it down.

When should my timing belt or timing chain be replaced?

Timing belts are replaced on a schedule set by the manufacturer, usually based on miles or years, and it's important not to skip it. On many engines a broken timing belt causes major internal damage. Timing chains are designed to last longer, but they can stretch and their guides and tensioners can wear, causing a rattle at startup or a check engine light. We can tell you what your engine uses and when it's due. See our timing belt replacement page for more.

Can overheating damage my engine?

Yes. Driving an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head, blow the head gasket and damage internal parts, turning a simple cooling system repair into a major engine repair. If the temperature gauge climbs into the red or a warning light comes on, pull over safely and shut the engine off. We repair cooling systems too, and catching the cause early is the best way to protect the engine.

What should I do if my oil pressure light comes on?

Pull over safely and shut the engine off as soon as you can. The oil pressure light means the engine may not be getting enough oil, and running it that way can cause serious damage in a short time. Check the oil level once the engine has cooled. Even if adding oil turns the light off, have it checked, because the engine is either using oil, leaking it or has a pressure problem.

How long does engine repair take?

Many on-site repairs like ignition coils, sensors and some gaskets are done in a single visit. Larger jobs such as head gaskets and timing chains take longer, and the time depends on the engine and parts availability. We give you a realistic timeline with your estimate, so you know what to expect before you approve the work.

Is your engine repair work under warranty?

Yes. All repair work is backed by our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on the parts we supply and the labor we perform.

What areas do you serve for engine repair?

We are based in Troy, Ohio and serve communities across the Miami Valley, including Troy, Tipp City, Pleasant Hill, Covington, West Milton, New Carlisle, Huber Heights, Vandalia, Fairborn, Beavercreek, Kettering, Centerville, Springboro.
