Yes. On most vehicles a serpentine belt is a job we do right in your driveway, apartment lot or workplace parking lot. All we need is safe access to the vehicle. For bigger repairs or bad weather, pickup and delivery from our offsite repair facility is available too.

The serpentine belt, also called a drive belt or accessory belt, is a single long belt that the engine uses to turn the alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor and, on many engines, the water pump. When it slips or breaks, every one of those systems is affected at once.

Most modern belts last somewhere around 60,000 to 90,000 miles, but age, heat and oil leaks can wear one out sooner. Your owner's manual lists the interval for your vehicle. The better guide is the belt's condition, so we check it for cracks, glazing and missing chunks whenever we're under your hood.

The most common sign is a squeal or chirp, especially on a cold start or when you turn the steering wheel or switch on the A/C. Other signs include visible cracks, fraying or a shiny glazed surface, a battery light on the dash, heavy steering, weak A/C or an engine that starts to run hot.

For a short time, usually, but a squeal means the belt is slipping and is telling you it is worn, loose or contaminated. It should be checked soon, because a belt that is slipping isn't fully charging the battery and can fail without much more warning.

You'll usually see the battery light come on and feel the steering get heavy right away. On engines where the belt drives the water pump, the engine can overheat within minutes. Pull over safely and turn the engine off. Driving on a broken belt can cause engine damage, so call or text us and we'll come to you or arrange pickup.

Not always, but they should always be checked. The automatic tensioner keeps the belt tight, and the idler and accessory pulleys spin on bearings that wear out. A weak tensioner or a noisy pulley will chew up a new belt quickly, so we inspect them every time and only recommend replacement when they need it.

No. The serpentine belt is on the outside of the engine and runs the accessories. A timing belt is inside the engine behind a cover and keeps the engine's internal parts in time with each other. Not every vehicle has a timing belt, and it is replaced on a different schedule. If yours is due, our timing belt replacement service covers it.

On many vehicles it takes about an hour, including the tensioner and pulley checks. Some engines with tight engine bays take longer. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we quote the job.
