When to Call a Mobile Mechanic for a Tune-Up
Worn spark plugs and weak coils usually announce themselves. If any of these sound like your vehicle, call or text us and we'll tell you whether a tune-up is the fix.
πRough or shaky idle
The engine shakes, stumbles or feels uneven at a stoplight, often from a worn plug or a weak coil.
β‘Misfires or hesitation
The car jerks, sputters or bogs down when you step on the gas, especially going up hills or merging.
πHard starting
The engine cranks longer than it used to before it catches, particularly on cold Ohio mornings.
β½Worse gas mileage
You're filling up more often for the same driving. Worn plugs and a dirty air filter waste fuel.
β οΈCheck engine light
A steady or flashing light can mean a misfire. A flashing light is serious, so drive as little as possible.
π 30,000+ miles since the last one
If it's been a while, or you don't know when the plugs were last changed, it's worth having us check.
A Real Tune-Up, Done in Your Driveway
Modern engines don't need the carburetor adjustments of the past, but they still depend on a strong spark and clean air in every cylinder. Over time spark plugs wear, coils weaken and the air filter clogs, and the engine slowly loses power, smoothness and fuel economy. A tune-up puts those parts back in shape before they cause a misfire or leave you with a car that won't start.
We bring the right parts for your engine, do the work wherever your vehicle is parked, and let you know about anything else that's starting to wear so you can plan and budget for it. You'll get an upfront quote before any work begins.
New spark plugs
We install the correct plugs for your engine, gapped and torqued to specification, and show you the old ones if you'd like.
Ignition coils & wires
We test the coils, boots and plug wires. If one is failing, we quote replacing it before doing any extra work.
Engine air filter
A fresh air filter lets the engine breathe and helps restore power and mileage. Cabin and fuel filters can be added on request.
Fluids & inspection
We check your fluids, scan for trouble codes and look over belts, hoses and the battery, then flag anything starting to wear.
Why Engines Fall Out of Tune
Every engine needs a tune-up eventually, but some lose their edge sooner than others. These are the causes we see most often.
Worn spark plugs
The electrodes wear down with every mile, so the spark gets weaker and the engine has to work harder to fire each cylinder.
Failing ignition coils
Heat and age break down coils and their boots. A weak coil causes misfires and can damage the catalytic converter if ignored.
A clogged air filter
Dust, pollen and road grime choke off airflow, which costs you power and fuel economy.
Short trips and Ohio winters
Lots of short drives in cold weather keep the engine from fully warming up, which fouls plugs faster.
Oil or coolant leaks
A leaking valve cover gasket can let oil into the plug wells, soaking the coil boots and causing misfires.
Skipped maintenance
The most common cause of all is a tune-up that's simply overdue. Staying on schedule is the cheapest way to keep your engine healthy.

Tune-Up FAQs
Straight answers to what drivers ask about tune-up intervals, spark plugs, coils and what a tune-up can fix.
How much does a tune-up cost?
It depends on your engine, since some have four spark plugs that are easy to reach and others have six or eight with some tucked under the intake. Call or text 937-609-3554 with your year, make and model and we'll give you an upfront quote, with no surprises and no hidden fees. Because we don't pay rent on a traditional shop, our overhead is lower and those savings are passed on to you. If we find a coil or anything else that needs replacing, you approve it before we do the work.
What's included in a tune-up?
Our tune-up covers new spark plugs, an inspection of the ignition coils, boots and plug wires, a new engine air filter, a check of your fluids, and a scan for stored trouble codes. We also look over belts, hoses and the battery and let you know about anything that's starting to wear, so you can plan ahead.
Can you do a tune-up at my home or work?
Yes. We come to your driveway or parking lot with the parts for your vehicle, so there's no shop visit and no waiting room. If the weather is unsafe for working outside or the job turns into a bigger repair, we can pick up your vehicle, fix it at our offsite repair facility and bring it back.
How often do I need a tune-up?
Most newer vehicles use long-life spark plugs that are due somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, while older vehicles and those with copper plugs need them every 30,000 miles or so. Your owner's manual lists the interval for your engine, or call us with your year, make, model and mileage and we'll look it up for you. If it's been 30,000 miles or more and you don't know when it was last done, it's worth having us check.
What are the signs my car needs a tune-up?
Common signs include a rough or shaky idle, an engine that misfires or hesitates when you accelerate, hard starting, worse gas mileage than usual, and a flashing or steady check engine light. Any of these can come from worn spark plugs or a failing ignition coil.
Do you replace ignition coils during a tune-up?
We test the coils during every tune-up. If one is failing and causing a misfire, we'll tell you and quote replacing it before we do any extra work. Some drivers choose to replace all the coils at once on high-mileage engines, and we'll give you honest advice on whether that makes sense for yours.
Will a tune-up improve my gas mileage?
If worn spark plugs, a misfire or a dirty air filter is costing you fuel, a tune-up can bring your mileage back to where it should be. It won't make a car more efficient than it was when new, but restoring a smooth, complete burn in every cylinder often makes a noticeable difference.
Can a tune-up fix my check engine light?
Sometimes. If the light is on for a misfire caused by worn plugs or a bad coil, a tune-up usually fixes it. We scan for codes before we start, and if the light points to something else, our engine diagnostics service will find the cause. A flashing check engine light means a severe misfire, so drive as little as possible and call us.
How long does a tune-up take?
Most tune-ups take one to three hours. Four-cylinder engines with easy-to-reach plugs are on the quicker end, while V6 and V8 engines that need the intake removed to reach the rear plugs take longer. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we quote the job.
Is your work under warranty?
Yes. Any parts we supply and repairs we perform, including spark plugs, ignition coils and filters, are backed by our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty.
What areas do you serve for tune-ups?
We are based in Troy, Ohio and serve communities across the Miami Valley, including Troy, Tipp City, Pleasant Hill, Covington, West Milton, New Carlisle, Huber Heights, Vandalia, Fairborn, Beavercreek, Kettering, Centerville, Springboro.
