Warning Signs

Does Your Car Need a Diagnostic?

Engine problems usually give a warning before they get expensive. Get them checked early and the fix is often simple.

Check engine light on

A steady light means the computer stored a fault. A flashing light usually means a severe misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.

Rough idle or shaking

Shaking at a stop, stumbling or a rough feel under load often points to a misfire from a coil, spark plug, injector or vacuum leak.

Hard starting or stalling

Long cranking, a car that won't start, or one that stalls at stops can come from fuel, ignition, sensor or electrical problems.

Loss of power

Hesitation, sluggish acceleration or a car stuck in limp mode means the engine computer is protecting the engine from a fault.

Worse fuel economy

A sudden drop in gas mileage, a fuel smell or black smoke often means a sensor is giving the computer bad information.

What We Do

Engine Diagnostics at Your Location

A trouble code tells you which system reported a problem, not which part failed. The same code can come from a vacuum leak, a dirty sensor, a weak fuel pump or a wiring fault. That's why replacing parts based on a free code read so often misses the real problem.

We use the code as the starting point. Our fully equipped service van brings a professional scan tool and test equipment to where your car is parked. We look at live engine data, test the components behind the code, and confirm the cause before recommending a repair, so you only pay to fix what's actually wrong.

Check engine light diagnosis

We read stored and pending codes and freeze-frame data, then test to confirm exactly what turned the light on.

Misfires & rough running

We find which cylinder is misfiring and why, whether it's an ignition coil, spark plug, injector, vacuum leak or something deeper.

Sensor testing

Oxygen, airflow, crankshaft, camshaft and temperature sensors fail often. We test them so you don't replace a good part.

No-starts & stalling

We test the fuel, ignition, starting and charging systems to find out why the car won't start or won't stay running.

Electrical & warning lights

Battery drains, charging problems, wiring faults and dashboard warning lights traced to the source.

Larger engine repairs

Many repairs are done during the visit. Larger engine jobs are done at our offsite repair facility, and we pick up and deliver your vehicle.

What We Find

The Most Common Reasons for a Check Engine Light

Knowing the likely cause helps you understand your repair estimate, and keeps the light from coming right back on.

  1. Loose or worn gas cap

The fuel system is sealed and tested for leaks. A cap that's loose, cracked or missing can set an evaporative emissions code.

  2. Ignition coils & spark plugs

Worn plugs and failing coils cause misfires, rough idle and lost power, and can damage the catalytic converter if ignored.

  3. Oxygen sensors

O2 sensors tell the computer how to mix fuel and air. When one fails, fuel economy drops and emissions go up.

  4. Mass airflow sensor

A dirty or failing airflow sensor misreads incoming air, causing hesitation, stalling and poor mileage.

  5. Vacuum leaks

Cracked hoses and leaking gaskets let in air the computer can't measure, causing lean codes, a rough idle and a high idle speed.

  6. Catalytic converter

A converter that's clogged or no longer working sets efficiency codes. It often fails because of an untreated misfire upstream.

Got Questions?

Engine Diagnostics & Check Engine Light FAQs

Straight answers to what drivers ask about warning lights, trouble codes, misfires and no-starts.

How much does engine diagnostics cost?

It depends on your vehicle and the problem. A loose gas cap, a failed sensor, a misfire and an intermittent electrical fault take different amounts of testing to track down. Diagnostic testing is a separate charge from the repair itself. Once we find the cause, you get an upfront estimate for the repair, and no work begins until you approve it. There are no hidden fees. Because we don't pay rent on a traditional shop, our overhead is lower and those savings are passed on to you. Call or text 937-609-3554 with your year, make and model and what the car is doing to get on the schedule.

Can you diagnose my car at my home or work?

Yes. We are a mobile mechanic, so we run engine diagnostics right in your driveway, apartment lot or workplace parking lot. All we need is a safe spot to park next to your vehicle. That means no tow and no driving a car that's running poorly to a shop. Many of the repairs we find can be done during the same visit. Larger engine repairs are done at our offsite repair facility, and we pick up and deliver your vehicle.

What does the check engine light mean?

The check engine light means the engine computer has detected a problem with the engine, the ignition, the fuel system or the emissions system and stored a trouble code. The cause can be as small as a loose gas cap or as serious as a misfire that's damaging the catalytic converter. The light alone doesn't tell you which, so it's worth having it diagnosed.

What's the difference between a steady and a flashing check engine light?

A steady light means a fault has been detected and should be checked soon. A flashing light usually means a severe misfire is happening right now, sending unburned fuel into the exhaust where it can overheat and ruin the catalytic converter. If your light is flashing, reduce your speed, avoid hard acceleration and call us. Since we come to you, you don't have to keep driving it.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

If the light is steady and the car drives normally, it's usually okay to drive for a short time, but have it checked soon. Small problems like a failing sensor can hurt fuel economy and lead to bigger repairs. If the light is flashing, the engine is overheating, you smell fuel, or the car is losing power, stop driving and call us.

Why not just get the code read for free at a parts store?

A code reader tells you which system reported a problem, not which part failed. A code for a lean condition, for example, can come from a vacuum leak, a dirty airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump or a leaking injector. Replacing parts based on the code alone often means paying for parts you didn't need while the real problem stays. We use the code as the starting point, then look at live data and test the components to confirm the cause.

Will clearing the code fix the problem?

No. Clearing the code turns the light off, but the fault that set it is still there, and the light will come back once the computer detects it again. Clearing codes also erases the freeze-frame data that helps pinpoint the problem, and it resets the readiness monitors needed to pass an emissions test. It's better to leave the code stored until the car is diagnosed.

Can a loose gas cap really turn on the check engine light?

Yes. The fuel system is sealed to keep fuel vapors in, and the computer tests that seal. A loose, worn or missing gas cap can set an evaporative emissions leak code. Tighten the cap until it clicks and the light may go off after several drive cycles. If it doesn't, the leak is somewhere else in the system and needs to be diagnosed.

What causes an engine misfire?

The most common causes are worn spark plugs, a failing ignition coil, a clogged or leaking fuel injector and vacuum leaks. Less often, a misfire comes from low compression or a mechanical problem inside the engine. You'll usually feel a misfire as a rough idle, shaking, hesitation or loss of power. We test the ignition, fuel and air side to find which cylinder is misfiring and why.

Can you diagnose a car that won't start?

Yes. A car that cranks but won't start usually has a fuel, spark or sensor problem, while one that won't crank at all usually has a battery, starter or electrical problem. Since we come to you, a no-start doesn't need a tow to get diagnosed. We test the system that's failing and tell you what it takes to get the car running again.

Do you diagnose problems that come and go?

Yes. Intermittent problems like occasional stalling, a light that comes and goes or a hesitation that only happens when the engine is warm take more work to catch. Stored codes and freeze-frame data show the conditions when the fault happened, and we test under those conditions when we can. Telling us exactly when it happens, cold or warm, at idle or at speed, helps a lot.

Do you diagnose electrical problems and other warning lights?

Yes. We diagnose battery drains, charging problems, wiring faults and dashboard warning lights, along with the check engine light. If a battery keeps dying or a warning light won't go off, we find out whether the problem is the battery, the alternator, a wiring fault or a module that won't shut off.

How long does engine diagnostics take?

Many problems are found during the visit. Intermittent faults, electrical problems and issues that need more testing can take longer. If the repair can be done on site, we can often do it during the same visit once you approve the estimate. Larger engine repairs are done at our offsite repair facility, with pickup and delivery. Either way, we tell you upfront.

Do you fix the problem after you diagnose it?

Yes. Once we find the cause, we explain it in plain English and give you an upfront estimate for the repair. Many repairs, like sensors, ignition coils, spark plugs and gas caps, can be done during the same visit. You decide whether to go ahead, and no work begins until you approve the estimate.

Can a check engine light cause me to fail an emissions test?

In most areas that require emissions testing, a check engine light that is on is an automatic failure. Recently cleared codes can also cause a failure because the readiness monitors haven't finished running. We diagnose and repair the fault so the light stays off and the car is ready for the test.

Is your diagnostic and repair work under warranty?

Yes. All repair work is backed by our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on the parts we supply and the labor we perform.

What areas do you serve for mobile engine diagnostics?

We are based in Troy, Ohio and serve communities across the Miami Valley, including Troy, Tipp City, Pleasant Hill, Covington, West Milton, New Carlisle, Huber Heights, Vandalia, Fairborn, Beavercreek, Kettering, Centerville, Springboro.
