When to Call a Mobile Mechanic About Your Steering & Suspension
Steering and suspension parts wear slowly, so it's easy to get used to the changes. If you notice any of these, call or text us and we'll come take a look.
πClunking over bumps
A knock or clunk over potholes, speed bumps or rough pavement usually points to worn ball joints, sway-bar links or bushings.
βοΈWandering or pulling
If the car drifts or you're constantly correcting the wheel to keep it straight, tie rods or other steering parts may be loose.
πUneven or cupped tire wear
Worn shocks and loose steering parts let the tires bounce and scrub, leaving bald edges or a scalloped, cupped pattern.
γ°οΈBouncy or floaty ride
If the car keeps bouncing after a bump or sways in turns, the struts or shocks have stopped controlling the springs.
πNose-dive when braking
Worn front struts let the nose drop hard when you brake, which shifts weight and adds to your stopping distance.
π§Leaking shocks or struts
Oily residue running down the side of a shock or strut means the fluid inside is escaping and it can no longer do its job.
We Find What's Worn, Then Fix Only What Needs It
A clunk or a wander can come from a dozen different parts, and they often wear together. Guessing gets expensive, so every job starts with a hands-on inspection and a road test to pin down exactly which part is causing the problem.
From there, we replace the worn parts with quality components and torque everything to factory specifications. If we find other parts that are close to the end of their life, we'll show you and give you an upfront quote, and nothing is replaced until you approve it.
Struts & shocks
We replace worn struts and shocks in pairs to stop the bounce, steady the car in turns and keep the nose level when you brake.
Tie rods & ball joints
We replace loose tie rod ends and ball joints so the steering is precise again and the wheels stay pointed where they should.
Bushings & links
We replace worn control arm bushings, sway-bar bushings and sway-bar links that cause clunks, rattles and extra body roll.
Control arms & mounts
When the bushings or ball joint are part of the arm, we replace the control arm, and we check strut mounts for wear and noise.
Why Steering & Suspension Parts Wear Out
Every suspension wears with time, but some parts give out early. These are the causes we find most often.
Potholes and rough roads
Every hard hit sends a jolt through the struts, ball joints and tie rods. Ohio's freeze-and-thaw pothole season is especially tough on them.
Age and mileage
Shocks and struts lose their damping a little at a time, and rubber bushings harden and crack, so the change often goes unnoticed.
Torn boots and grease loss
Ball joints and tie rod ends are sealed by rubber boots. Once a boot tears, dirt and water get in and the joint wears quickly.
Road salt and rust
Winter salt corrodes springs, sway-bar links and mounting hardware, which can lead to clunks, rattles and broken parts.
Heavy loads and towing
Hauling and towing put extra strain on springs, shocks and rear bushings, which shortens their life.
Curb strikes and impacts
Sliding into a curb on an icy road can bend a tie rod or control arm and knock the wheels out of alignment.

Steering & Suspension FAQs
Straight answers to what drivers ask about clunks, struts, tie rods and alignments.
How much does steering and suspension repair cost?
It depends on your vehicle and which parts are worn. A sway-bar link is a small job, while a pair of struts or a set of control arms is a bigger one. Call or text 937-609-3554 with your year, make and model and we'll give you an upfront quote, with no surprises and no hidden fees. Because we don't pay rent on a traditional shop, our overhead is lower and those savings are passed on to you. If our inspection turns up other worn parts, we quote those upfront too, and nothing is replaced until you approve it.
Can you repair my suspension at my home or work?
Yes. Struts, shocks, tie rod ends, sway-bar links and many ball joints and bushings can be replaced right in your driveway, apartment lot or workplace parking lot. All we need is a flat, safe spot to lift the vehicle. For bigger repairs or bad weather, pickup and delivery from our offsite repair facility is available too.
What are the signs of worn steering or suspension parts?
The most common signs are a clunk or knock over bumps, a car that wanders or pulls and needs constant correction, a bouncy or floaty ride, the nose diving when you brake, a steering wheel that feels loose or shakes, and uneven or cupped wear on your tires. Oil leaking down the side of a shock or strut is another giveaway.
Is it safe to drive with worn suspension?
It depends on what's worn. A tired shock makes the ride uncomfortable and adds to your stopping distance, but a badly worn ball joint or tie rod end can separate and cause you to lose steering control. If you hear a new clunk or the steering suddenly feels loose, have it checked right away. If the car feels unsafe to drive, don't drive it. Call or text us and we'll come to you.
What's the difference between shocks and struts?
Both control how your car bounces after a bump. A shock absorber is a standalone damper. A strut is a damper that is also part of the suspension structure, with the coil spring mounted around it, so it helps hold up the weight of the vehicle. Most cars today have struts in front and either struts or shocks in the rear.
How often should struts and shocks be replaced?
There's no fixed mileage that fits every vehicle. Many last somewhere around 50,000 to 100,000 miles, but rough roads, potholes and heavy loads wear them out sooner. The better guide is how the car rides and stops, so we check them for leaks, bounce and worn mounts whenever we inspect your suspension.
Should struts or shocks be replaced in pairs?
Yes. We replace them in pairs on the same axle, both fronts or both rears, so the vehicle rides and handles evenly from side to side. A new strut on one side and a worn one on the other can make the car lean and pull.
Will I need a wheel alignment after suspension repair?
Often, yes. Replacing tie rods, control arms or struts changes the angles of your wheels. We'll tell you before the job whether your repair needs an alignment, and we recommend getting one soon afterward so your new parts and your tires wear evenly.
How long does steering and suspension repair take?
Most single repairs, like a pair of sway-bar links or tie rod ends, take an hour or two. A pair of struts or a set of control arms can take a few hours. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we quote the job.
Is your work under warranty?
Yes. Any parts we supply and repairs we perform, including struts, shocks, tie rods, ball joints and bushings, are backed by our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty.
